Deadline for 2007: October 15, 2006

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell will accept
press kit submissions for bands wishing to perform at the 2007 Festival
between September 1 and October 15, 2006.

The Festival respectfully limits applicants to bands living and working in
Louisiana, and those bands who lived in Louisiana up until Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita, but have not yet been able to return home.
The mission
of the Festival is to preserve, perpetuate, and promote the music and
culture of New Orleans and Louisiana.

All qualified applicants may submit their press kits between
Sept. 1 and Oct. 15 to:

Be sure to include a recording, bio, photo, press clippings and contact
information. We do not accept EPKs at this time. We will contact all

Festival once decisions have been made.

Each year's event showcases five unique and broad-based craft areas:
Note - these email addresses are old and may not still be active. If you get no response, try the phone.

Congo Square African Marketplace: features unique, hand crafted art works that reflect cultural influences seen throughout theAfrican Diaspora. Presentations by artists and vendors resonate with the rich African-Caribbean cultural legacy in Congo Square. Congosquare@nojazzfest.com

Contemporary Crafts: presents work by some of the nation's most talented contemporary artists. It features original, hand created, one-of-a-kind designs and accepts applicants from all crafts media and disciplines. Contemporary@nojazzfest.com

Louisiana Marketplace: introduces fair-goers to a variety of works by only Louisiana artisans and craftspeople. The Marketplace showcases works that express aspects of the state's unique cultural heritage. Marketplace@nojazzfest.com

Native American Village: look into the diverse culture of our nation's native people. Artists from Louisiana and across the nation demonstrate and sell handmade works of their traditional and cultural crafts. Native@nojazzfest.com

Louisiana Folklife Tent: you can see musicians meticulously handcraft accordions and guitars, and papier mâché artists create whimsical sculptures for Mardi Gras floats. Watch as an Isleño woodcarver transforms indigenous cypress into lifelike reproductions of Louisiana waterfowl right before your eyes. These are only a few of the traditions featured in the Louisiana Folklife Tent that bear witness to our state's unique cultural history.

Food Vendors:

Probably 95% of the vendors return every year, so competition for any openings will be extremely tough.  (One year back in the early 70's, there were over 100 applicants for three openings). And if you have county-fair type fair (corn dogs; turkey legs; funnel cakes), don't bother.  But if you serve something with a Louisiana / Southern / Carribean / African style, give it a shot.

Prospective food vendors are judged in 3 categories: taste, appearance, and logistics. As far as that last category goes... The typical booth has 2 or 3 serving lines, and if the demand is there, can serve 2-3 people per minute from each, steadily, for 8 hours. So that's 2000-3000 customers or more, on a busy day. If you are used to cooking your food to order, forget it. Most vendors have 2 people taking orders and cash; 2-3 more who plate the food; and a few more in the back who do the cooking. All vendors are located in Fest-provided booths, by the way - you can't serve directly from your catering truck, as at some other Fests.

This was recently posted on the official site:

All applicants must be full-time Louisiana residents.

No self - contained vending structures or vehicles are permitted.

No “carnival food” items will be considered. Each year we get numerous inquiries regarding sales of kettle corn, funnel cakes, hot dogs, and the like. We intentionally avoid this type of food because it is contradictory to the mission of our food fair – to provide an array of foods exemplifying the culinary culture of our region.

Significant experience operating a high volume, high quality food service and/or catering business is an important factor in our selection process. Be prepared to provide references for each event in which you have participated. For our purposes, “large scale” denotes serving a minimum of 2,500 portions per day.
